Voluntary work in Mokattam

Saturday 3/17/12 time 1:48 PM - Saara Nurmi & Pia Pellonpää

We are at voluntary work here in Cairo in two different places in Mokattam. One place is the young street mothers' shelter and the other is one children’s center.

Our journey to the shelter is quite interesting; we have to take the metro and two microbuses to get there. First we need to take the metro from Sakanat el Maadi to El Malek el Saleh. There are separate carriages for women only because sexual harassment is quite common here. The carriages for women make it really easy and comfortable to travel by metro. Used baby clothes for shelter home mothers in Cairo

Saturday 1/21/12 - Merja Rukko

We collect used but clean baby clothes and pack them as layette sets for the young street mothers and their babies in Cairo.

If you have all or some of the following, please, send the items packed in a transparent plastic bag to the address below. Write on the bag, if the contents are boy/girl/unisex.

Size: 56-60-70

Items you can pack as one layette:

- a body

- a babygrow

- a baby hat

- a pair of baby socks

- a pair of mittens

- a quilted (or fleece) sleepsuit or an all-in-one

If you don't have all of the above mentioned items, please, write on the bag which items are missing and we will add the missing items before sending the layette set to Cairo.

If you have a picture book or a baby toy, you can also include it in the package. Baby-size sleeping bags, blankets and sheets might also be useful.

Address: Rukko/Artefix Oy, Oravannahkatori 1A 2.krs, 02120 Espoo. You can also send an email to Merja et merja (at) rukko.fi. She might be able to come and pick up your package on her daily route between Tapiola and Pasila.

Thank you for your help!

Being so privileged and fortunate in life

Wednesday 4/6/11 time 6:09 PM - Minna Herranen

Being so privileged and fortunate in life – blessed with all comfort - I was thinking it's about time to pay back something to people who really need it.

I am from Finland but feel that living outside from my motherland 10 years, from which last 6 years in UAE, Dubai, have opened my eyes to realize that my country like most of the European or western countries are best places to live if you need health care, free quality education and social support. We have resources to help. I feel guilty if I did not help, because I can.
